Routine preventive care is imperative for senior cats to prevent or delay conditions that older animals are more prone including arthritis, organ failure, cancers, and diseases of the kidney, heart, and liver. We strongly recommend biannual wellness visits to make sure that all of your cat’s healthcare needs are being met. As your cat grows older, changes begin to take place in their bodies that can affect their overall health, well-being and comfort. Illness and injuries occur that can be more easily managed when detected early. At Westchester Veterinary Center, our goal is for you and your cat to enjoy the longest, healthiest life together.
Cats are generally more private about their health issues, so it’s strongly advised to look for unusual behavior or changes with your senior cat.
Please call us if you notice any of the following signs to schedule an appointment to have your cat evaluated:
- Weight loss
- Decrease in appetite
- Bad breath or drooling
- Increased appetite, especially if accompanied by weight loss
- Changes to hair coat quality
- Increased vocalization or frantic behavior, especially if accompanied by a ravenous appetite
- Excess or change in urination frequency, volume, etc.
- Increased water intake
- Reduced exercise, increased stiffness, trouble jumping or walking
- Apparent pain when your cat moves or is handled
- Any vomiting, abnormal stool or decreased frequency of bowel movements
- A new lump or growth, especially if it appears to increase in size quickly
- Bloated abdomen
- Depression or listless behavior
- Excessive panting
- Heavy or rapid breathing when resting
- Coughing
- Going outside the litter box
